A FINELY CAST PAIR OF 19th CENTURY BRONZE
CLASSICAL FIGURES - FRENCH ATTRIBUTED.
Measuring 14.5" in height,
these classical ladies lean against Corinthian columns while holding
the objects that define their purpose...one holds a lute while the
other an urn overspilling with grapes. Wearing layers of weighted
fabrics that reveal glimpses of their curvacious femininity and a
demure downward focus, they emanate quiet gentleness and inner strength.
While these bronzes are unsigned and do not have foundry marks, they
have the quality, weight and patina of the finest quality bronzes
that were cast in 19th Century France.

EMMANUEL VILLANIS (1858-1914)
TURN OF THE CENTURY FRENCH BRONZE BUST
DIANE

This stunning, signed, bronze bust by one of France's most prolific turn-of-the-century French sculptors measures 23.5 inches in height and maintains its original and marvelous dark green patina. Villanis created several versions of Diane, but this one is our favorite, as she is both sensual and empowering. Diane, was initially known as the protector to wildlife, and later as Luna, the moon goddess. Diane elegantly wears a crescent moon as a headdress. |

"Dalliance" is
featured on page 393 of Harold Berman's, "Bronzes, Sculptors,
and Founders 1800-1930" and according to Berman was created circa1860.
There are two minor losses to this piece. There is a single rose missing,
that the figure held in her right hand, this we would not have known
of had we not seen the photo in the Berman text, and there is slight
discoloration to a small piece of the dogs collar. The details of
this piece are so exceptional that we felt in spite of this it would
be a wonderful addition to our selection of Fine 19th century French
bronze.
