PIERRE CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1851-1931)

FRENCH ACADEMIC ARTIST
FINE 19th-CENTURY FRENCH PASTEL

Without its frame this exceptional, artist-signed, pastel-on-paper, laid down on canvas, measures 39 5/8 inches tall by 29 1/8 inches wide. With the frame this measure 49.25" tall by 38.75" wide. This piece beautifully represents Carrier-Belleuse's subtle use of line and color to create layers of nuance in both light and tone. It is presented in a fine custom-made, 22 karat gold-leaf, Louis XV manner Munn Frame.

PIERRE CARRIER-BELLEUSE studied at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts and made his debut at the Salon of Paris in 1875.  The son of the pre-eminent sculptor Albert Carrier-Belleuse,  Pierre showed promise from a young age. He was as adept in the medium of pastels (a very difficult medium to master), as he was with oils. In 1877 he received Honorable Mention for his work, and in 1899 he received a Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle.

Young woman with a bird and flower. Artist-signed and dated 1878, this oil on canvas measures 25.25" by 25" without its frame and comes to us directly from Paris. This pensive study of a young woman, with a bird and flower, wearing a turquoise-colored silk dress, beautifully represents this artist's concern for detail and his decorative approach to painting. His paintings are part of the permanent collections in fine art museums in Europe (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), and his monumental decorative and historical paintings grace the walls of the Sorbonne and the Paris Mint.

ALBERT LUDOVICI JR (1852-1932)

19th CENTURY OIL ON PANEL
6.75 inches by 4.5 inches, without frame

This artist signed, oil on panel, depicts a groom presenting his bride. It is a small but lovely and elegant painting, and is presented in a fine custom 22 karat gold leaf frame that we designed specifically for this piece.

Ludovici was a member of the British Academy of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, and a member of the French school of painting.  He is best known for his genre paintings. However, his oeuvre also consisted of landscapes and interiors. He studied under the tutelage of his father, Albert Ludovici (1820-1894), and was active and resided in both London and Paris where he exhibited among James Whistler's circle. Ludovici was a colleague and close friend of Whistler, a fellow Society member, who is said to have influenced his art and his life.

Ludovici describes his love of coaching paintings and his painting of the Dickens Coaching Series (which were popular jigsaw puzzles in turn of the century England), in his book entitled, "An Artist's Life in London and Paris”.

LE BAIN.

A native of Toulese, Louis Priou was medaled in 1869 and again in 1874 with a first-class distinction. An exhibitor at the Paris Salon his paintings have sold at both Christie's and Sotheby's. With Le Bain, Priou captures a tender moment between mother and child. It is artist-signed and measures 10 3/8" by 13 3/8" without its frame. Presented in its fine antique giltwood frame it measures 22.25" x 19.25".

This painting has been professionally cleaned, revealing its lovely original hues. The frame has recently been restored, as a narrow fillet set along the border of the painting was missing. The new fillet blends beautifully with the antique frame and looks as if it is original to the piece.

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN (1800-1855)
CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, Pair of 19th century French Genre Paintings, Premier Lecon and La Cueilette, over seven feet tall

A FINE AND BEAUTIFUL
PAIR OF 19TH-CENTURY FRENCH GENRE PAINTINGS,
MEASURING OVER 7 FEET IN HEIGHT- directly from Paris

La Cueillette and Premier Lecon

These lively genre paintings, created in the Rococo taste, capture the romance and charm of French country life, and probably were created circa 1855. (After 1835 Roqueplan began creating large-scale anecdotal pictures). Both paintings are signed, Clle Roqueplan. La Cueillette (Picking Fruit) with its antique frame, measures 90.5 inches x 57.5 inches and Premier Lecon (The First Lesson) also with its frame, measures 90.5 inches x 52.5 inches. An important genre painter from the 19th Century French School, Roqueplan's paintings are part of the permanent collections in museums worldwide, including The Hermitage and The Wallace Collection.

This is the first time in 17 years that a large-scale pair of paintings by Roqueplan have been on the international art market. In 1989 a similar pair sold at Sotheby’s, Monaco. The sheer expansiveness of these paintings, with their rich colors, texture and movement are truly breathtaking! We are delighted to have acquired these beautiful and spirited works of art.

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, Pair of 19th century French Genre Paintings, Premier Lecon and La Cueilette, over seven feet tall

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, was born in Mallemort, Bouches-du-Rhône on Feb 18, 1800 and died in Paris, Sept 25, 1855. A student of Antoine-Jean Gros and Alexandre Abel de Pujol, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in February 1818, and first exhibited at the Salon in 1822; where he was a regular exhibitor until 1855. Considered by scholars to be an important genre painter from the early-mid 1800's French School, his oeuvre consists mainly of landscapes, marines, historical subjects and genre scenes in oils and watercolors. Roqueplan’s early paintings were small landscapes influenced by the work of R. P. Bonington, his contemporary at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and that of Eugene Isabel. In the mid-1830s he progressed to large-scale anecdotal pictures, which brought him much fame. In 1837 Roqueplan executed a Napoleonic epic painting in the manner of Gros, for the Musée d'Histoire at Versailles (Battle of Elchingem), and in 1841 he painted a series of historical paintings on the ceiling of the library at the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris.

Here is an image of the Roqueplan paintings in their previous residence in Île-de-France

An interesting note:

The same red dress worn by the artist's models in both of these paintings is also worn by the woman in Roqueplan's lovely painting titled, Rousseau and Madamoiselle Galley Gathering Cherries. The man in that painting also appears to be the same man that is in our painting, La Cueillette. This piece, along with nine other paintings by Roqueplan, can be viewed on the website of the Wallace Collection, London, www.WallaceCollection.org
